D. Levidis Country House
Pallini, Attica, 1938-40
Architect
Pericles Sakellarios (1905-1985)
Inspired by the modern English country homes and
the local tradition, this country house is a fine example of neo-Romantic
modernism with remarkable durability in time. It is a work by Pericles
Sakellarios, one of the most significant architects of private homes
in Attica in the 1930s, 50s and 60s.
The Levidis country home is at the top of a hill in the Mesogeia valley.
It is a large building complex associated with an old cylindrical tower.
On plan the home is in the shape of an H in the free building system
so as to ensure natural lighting and a good view from all points.
The spaces are arranged functionally in wings. The façades show
the effect of harmonising the diverse influences and features, such
as groin-vaulting, colonnades, tile roofs, wooden door and window frames,
plastered walls, etc. Stylistically, this country home can be described
as having a spare, neo-Romantic Mediterranean style.
