Small Kouremenos Apartment Building

17 Dionissiou Areopagitou St, Athens, c. 1930

Architect
Vassileios Kouremenos (1875-1957)

The small apartment block that belonged to the Kouremenos family is a noteworthy instance of the harmonisation of the compositional rules of the Beaux Arts with the modern current of Art Déco and the spirit of Athenian neoclassicism. It was designed in about 1930 by the distinguished architect, NTUA professor and academician Vassileios Kouremenos, a graduate of the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. The building is located opposite the Acropolis, facing the ancient Theatre of Dionysus. It consists of a ground floor and three apartments on as many floors, which have seen many interior changes.
Of particular interest is the treatment of the marble-revetted façade, on which the modernity and abstract tendency of the age are combined with symmetry and the proportions of the neoclassical tradition. The most memorable features of the façade are the harmony of the multicoloured marble facing, the bas-relief decoration of the main entrance and the strong colours of the Art Déco-style mosaics on the third floor.
