Apartment Building
Didotou and Delfon, Athens, 1987-1991
Architect:
Alexandros Patsouris (1955-1998)
This building designed by the architect Alexandros
Patsouris is considered one of the more interesting proposals by Greek
neo-modernism. It was among the works representing Greece in the Architectural
Biennale in Venice in 2000. The Greek participation was curated by Ilias
Zengelis.
This apartment block includes seven residences on the upper floors and
two-storey high shops on the ground floor. Its most characteristic feature
is the elimination of the concept of apartments occupying one floor
and the development of dwellings in three dimensions. The internal complexity
is expressed on exterior as well. The materials with which the elevations
are treated are unplastered concrete painted white and large glass panels.
This building was designed in the spirit of a mild contrast with its
urban surroundings. Although it was incorporated into the row building
system, it is differentiated from the neighbouring buildings by the
cubist treatment of its exterior and the harmonious synthesis of solids
and voids on its façades.
