The Agricultural Bank of Greece training Centre in
Kastri is one of the unconventional and technologically innovative expressions
of Greek postmodernism. The complex is in a residential area in Kastri,
a northern suburb of Athens, and was built as a training centre for
employees of the Agricultural Bank of Greece, with a capacity of 300
persons. It is on the same lot as the interwar hotel that was converted
into a guest house for the training centre.
The building complex, despite the fact that it does not exceed two or
three storeys, is partially sunk into the ground owing to the height
restrictions in the building regulations. The classrooms are arranged
along the corridors and are lighted from the ceiling, while the areas
on the lower levels are lighted by lower courtyards. The flat roofs
have been laid out for use as open space. The form of the building is
characterised by small-scale volumes with turret-type finials and surfaces
faced with solid bricks in two colours, ochre and terracotta, in conjunction
with white metal features.
