Bank of Crete Branch
Voukourestiou and Valaoritou Sts, Athens, 1975-78
Architect
Constantinos Decavallas (1925-)
Associate architect
I. Hitzanidi-Vlahaki
Designed in the spirit of mild contrast with its
urban surroundings, this building by Constantinos Decavallas is a late
example of tamed brutalism.
It is an eight-floor building of mixed function in the centre of Athens.
The main branch of the Bank of Crete (now Cretabank) is housed on the
ground floor and in the two basements, while the administration area
occupies the first two floors, which communicate by means of an independent
lift. The other floors - the third, fourth and three inset top floors
- house offices.
The treatment of the elevations expresses the main functions of the
building and reveals its structural members of reinforced concrete.
