Landscaping of Koryzi Square

Filothei, 1991-93

Architect
Nicos Valsamakis (1924-)

The renovation of Koryzi Square was one of the rare town-planning works by distinguished architect Nicos Valsamakis. His design seeks to isolate the square from the noise and emissions of Kapodistriou St, and to integrate it into the Filothei region so as to foster use by its citizens.
The main concept was to create a hillock that cuts off Kapodistriou and rests on a retaining wall on the side of the square where two specific areas are created. The first is the leisure area surrounded by a circular pergola, partially roofed by aluminium latticework. The pergola has round plastered columns painted white. Under it and within its perimeter Oregon pine benches were placed alternately with planters, while the centre of the region has been planted. The second region includes the space around the statue of Koryzi, also landscaped with benches and plants and a kiosk. The paved surfaces of the square are organised geometrically on a square grid defined by strips of light-coloured Cretan stone, while the remaining section is covered by ceramic tiles.
