The Faculty of Theology on the University of Athens campus in Zographou is one of the best-known applications of the international Team X design ideology and Le Corbusier’s brutalist code in Greece during the 1970s. The design for the building complex won first prize in an open architectural competition in 1965.
The sloping terrain led to the solution of creating parallel units with different numbers of floors. On the highest level, there is one floor while on the lowest, north side, there are four. These units are clearly distinguished in terms of their functions and include a main entrance and library, three amphitheatres, three practice classrooms, faculty offices and four special institutes.
These functional units are linked by means of lateral corridors, open-air and enclosed walkways. Thus interior atriums are created that ensure lighting and ventilation;
The façades of visible concrete are treated in a plastic spirit with allusions to monastic architecture.
