Karolos Koun Art Theatre

14 Frynichou St, Plaka, Athens, 1983-84

Architect
Manos Perrakis (1937-)

This is a theatre with an open stage that resulted from the creative remodelling of a timber-yard in Plaka, the oldest quarter of the historic centre of Athens. A work by Manos Perrakis, it is one of the main examples of Greek theatrical architecture, expressing the spirit of Karolos Koun’s avant-garde Theatro Technis (Art Theatre) by means of its layout and style.
Designed with knowledge, economy of resources and flair, the little theatre on Frynichou St suggests, but does not impose, the presence of the architect.
The stage is an open square occupying the entire height of the building in a central position. The spectators’ seats are laid out on two levels: in the sloping graduated stalls and the balcony. The side balconies can also be used as part of the stage action.
On the second level there is the control room, roofed veranda, dressing rooms and offices.
The materials dominant in the treatment of the interior are wood, iron and plaster.
