Theatre on Kykladon St
11 Kykladon and Kefallinias Sts, Athens, 1981-82
Architect
Kyriakos Krokos (1941-1998)
This is a 156-seat theatre with an open stage that
was the product of the creative conversion of a ground floor storeroom.
This work by Kyriakos Krokos combines his empirical and sensitive architecture
with the unconventional theatrical work of his client, charismatic director
and actor Lefteris Voyiatzis. Designed with limited financial resources,
with modesty and affection, the little theatre on Kykladon St suggests
the presence of the architect rather than imposing it.
The seats are laid out amphitheatrically on wooden platforms on three
sides of the rectangular stage. The fabric-covered seats on metal frames,
and the other theatrical equipment including light fixtures, bar etc.,
were designed and built by the architect with particular care. The materials
used in creating the theatre on Kykladon St are red bricks, unplastered
concrete and stone masonry.
The result is a simple and functional theatre that acquires a special
character through the sensitive handling of colour and materials.
