TEB office building

75 Vas. Sofias Ave, Athens, 1981-86

Alkisti Tricha (1942-)

Built on the main thoroughfare of Vasilissis Sofias, the office building of the Volos Technical Company S.A. (TEB) is sharply differentiated from its urban surroundings. It also numbers among the works built by Alexandros N. Tombazis and Associates, which has aroused the interest of specialists for its advanced technology and unconventional morphology.
The building consists of seven office levels, a covered ground floor area that connects the building’s entrance with its vertical circulation core and underground parking facilities. Its elevation, which is incorporated into the row-building system in downtown Athens, is treated as base-trunk-crown, which mitigates the sense of a single glass surface. Its form is characterised by geometric purity of the square grid of the metal skeleton of the openings and the shading system. The metal shading device protects against the sunlight and at the same time contributes to the preservation of the building. The metal features are painted bright blue and are in contrast with the bricks that cover the full surfaces.
