Karakosta Residence

74 Diamantidou St, Paleo Psychiko, 1966-67

Architect
Seva Karakosta (1938-)

This single-family home in the upscale suburb of Paleo Psychiko was designed by architect Seva Karakosta, one of the most active representatives of her generation. It houses her residence and architect’s office and therefore can be considered an absolute expression of her personal views about the suburban residence.
It consists of a basement, ground floor and upper floor. The entrance is through the one-floor section in which the kitchen and service areas are housed. On the ground floor of the two-storey wing, there is an open area facing on both streets that includes the living room and studio that can be separated with light sliding doors. The living room and studio are visually and functionally united with the outdoor environment through large openings. The bedrooms are on the upper floor.
The building consists of two rectangular volumes in the shape of a T, situated vertically along the length of the lot following the slope so that the building is oriented southward.
The treatment of the modern façades is simple with allusions to the Greek tradition.
The materials used on both the interior and exterior are white stucco, wooden door and window frames and floors of irregularly shaped marble tiles.
